One great thing about living with a 3 year old is that you have an excuse to do kid-stuff!! This weekend we made our own puff-paint, played with milk and food coloring and built and decorated (and ate) a haunted gingerbread house!

First, we made our own puff paint.

I used the recipe from here. I made my own self-rising flour with just regular flour, baking powder and salt (recipe here). You can just microwave the drawing for 5-10s and the paint rises!

Science Factoid
: The reason the puff-paint "rises" is because of the baking powder in the mixture. When heated, baking powder releases carbon dioxide (a gas) which bubbles up within whatever your making.

Since it's so close to Halloween, we all drew Halloween-themed pictures. Here's mine:

Another sciency thing we did is a trick with milk and food coloring. Basically you have a plate of milk, add drops of food coloring and then add one drop of dish soap (surfactant) and watch the colors swirl together. Carolynne (my niece) wasn't as interested in this as we were, but it was still fun. You can watch a video of the phenomenon here.

Science Factoid: There are a few reasons why the milk/food coloring reacts the way it does. Milk is mostly water, but also has vitamins, minerals, proteins, and fat dispersed within it. First, when you drop the soap into the milk it drops the surface tension and allows the food coloring to move more freely within the milk. Second, the soap also forms little micelles (cluster of soap molecules) around the fats, allowing for the fats to be more dispersed. The movement that happens when the micelles meet the fats causes a lot of movement. Once the fat is dispersed, the movement will stop. And lastly, adding soap breaks a lot of chemical bonds between the fats and proteins, causing them to bend and roll around. This shoves around the food coloring molecules - so you can see a lot of movement.

Dave's mom sent us a care package a few weeks ago that included a Haunted Gingerbread House. It had all of its parts already made, all we had to do was put it together and decorate it! Once we had decorated it, we actually found out that the majority of the parts were vegan, so it was quickly devoured (1/2 of the members in my apt. are vegan). So thanks Barbara, Carolynne had a lot of fun decorating it, and the rest of us had a great time eating it!

As if that wasn't enough going on this weekend, we also went out to Walden Pond to have a picnic and to go for a walk and do some leaf-peeping.

And here is a picture from my recent trip to Albuquerque, NM. I didn't get to visit much, because I went for work, but this huge mountain was always in my view. I believe it's Sandia Peak.

October has been overwhelmingly awesome for me, and here is why (in picture form):

I went to the Ig Nobel Awards:

I rode a bike for the first time in 10 years - through Boston! This was for the Bike & Brew Tour we went on for my birthday.

I went Apple Picking!! And had a weekend on the cider donut diet, which I am now working off. It was so worth it.

Since we got another load of apples, I made another batch of Apple Butter!

Dave and I took a super quick trip down to NYC to visit with my brother and his girlfriend, and to see a live taping of my favorite NPR show, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me.

We also pretended to be Superheroes at the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Store!!

I also turned 24!! And I got a pretty huge promotion after only 2 years at my job!! I am now a Senior Research Associate! The new title also came with a 13% raise!

Oh and the best thing yet, it's not even half over!!!!

It's my 24th birthday today! Jess over at Project Fancy did a post on her 24th about 25 things she wants to do before she turns the big 2 5, and I thought that was a great idea! So here are my 25 things I want to do before I turn 25 (in no particular order)!!

  1. Learn photography (read online course given by reddit)
  2. Learn photoshop/gimp (also online course)
  3. Read at least 5 books. (that number may seem low, but I'm going from practically 0)
  4. Get back into gaming, start and finish at least 3 games.
  5. Enjoy another season of fresh veg from CSA's.
  6. Lose 5-10lbs (in addition to the 35lb I lost last year)
  7. Save more money.
  8. Pay off at least 1 loan in full (I have loans ranging from 3k to 25k - so it's doable on the lower end)
  9. Take a week off in the summer - just for relaxing/crafting.
  10. Visit friends in Seattle more.
  11. Make more definite plans to move out to Seattle.
  12. Start and finish my apron!
  13. Camp at least twice.
  14. Visit the rest of the Harbor Islands. (rollover from Summer '10)
  15. Make at least 75% of my Christmas presents.
  16. Make pickles
  17. Go blueberry picking.
  18. Run a 5k.
  19. Make bento lunches more often (3 x a week)
  20. Attempt to make Mozzarella again.
  21. Take a bike ride along the Somerville Bike Path.
  22. Eat out at local restaurants more often (Bergamot, Foundry and Journeyman all on my list)
  23. Support WBUR when possible.
  24. Finish decorating my bedroom.
  25. Build up my jewelry collection by purchasing/crafting (I haven't been one to wear jewelry, so most of the stuff I have is from highschool - I need to update that a bit)

Phew - that was a bit hard to get all 25 things. There are a few definite goals in there that I want to finish, but if I don't get to all of them -that's OK too. That just means I have more reasons to keep blogging :P ! Here's to a year full of fun stuff and getting things done!
