I guess I've taken a sort-of summer break in blogging. I've still done quite a lot since the last time I posted, here are a few images of what I've been up to lately.

Vanilla Ice Cream with Bacon and Chocolate Chunks!

Visited Georges Island.

Camped in Washington!

Celebrated a friends wedding, twice, and in 2 different countries!!

Moved (again!) !

I also updated my 25 before 25 list - most of them done/sortof done! We are still getting settled here in the new place, but I do have plans to craft a ton more. Hopefully, that'll motivate me to blog more!

There is just something about summer that makes me want to grill absolutely everything I eat. OK maybe I want to grill everything I eat no matter what. Summer just makes it easier. Today I decided to make a grilling feast while Dave was in class/working on homework. It was tasty!

I really like this photo, but the corn is out of focus - oops! And yes, we ate on a Disney Princess table.

Phew - everything in focus!

I made quite a few things! The main attraction were the BBQ ribs. I used this recipe, which was a bit different than what I was used to. You bake the ribs first with a lot of juicy things and then grill them with the sauce to make it crispy and caramelized. For the slaw, I just julienned carrots and purple kohlrabi (from our CSA) and made a sauce of lemon juice, mayo and dijon mustard. I then took the greens from the kohlrabi and also some swiss chard (also from our CSA) and made some chips, similar to kale chips.

And last, but certainly not least I made some
elote. It is a Mexican name for corn on the cob, and is a popular street food in Mexico. I first had this dish at Dorado in Brookline (which has the most amazing REAL Mexican fare) and absolutely loved it. I followed the recipe here, and added some cilantro. I found the cheese at my local Shaws, I'm not sure if that is just because there is a large Mexican population here, or because our local supermarket is awesome. But if you don't have it - you can use Parmesan cheese.

The feast was so tasty and was perfect on a HOT summer night.

You may remember, a while back I was gifted a sewing machine from my Grandmother. I even had grand plans to make an apron. It has helped me make a few SIMPLE (aka sew a straight(ish) line) gifts, but in general I've been too afraid of it. Then about 2 weeks before my niece's 4th birthday, this pattern pops up on one of the blogs I read. I was nervous, but trusted Dana to make a thorough pattern with lots of pictures and step-by-step instructions.

Picture from Dana at dana-made-it.com

And she did! It was almost like I had someone behind me the whole time saying "OK now you cut this piece. OK now sew them together - watch out for this part." It was a really easy pattern to follow. But even with the easiness of it, I absolutely had my issues.

First off, I accidentally sewed the arms shut! I could probably spend an entire post listing the things I did wrong, but you can absolutely see in the piece that I was improving! The last parts that I did were the best, and the first parts I did look like it was actually my niece who made it.

I'm not exactly sure where the courage came from to actually make it, but I'm glad I did. I absolutely learned a lot. And I'm semi-proud of the outcome. Here it is after we put it to some good use after a water balloon fight!
